Otago Daily Times Filed Under: ATV Utility Vehicle Hunting Buggy – The rear electric atv motor is visible mounted on the rear axle of the Barefoot Motors electric ATV prototype Electric all-terrain vehicles may not impress the dune-and trail-riding crowd that rides for recreation, but a few small companies expect organic farmers and vineyard growers will pay a premium to gather cattle and spray vines without the carbon footprint of a gas vehicle. While automakers are toiling to produce electric cars that will fit the demands of American drivers, Ashland-based Barefoot Motors is on the verge of turning out heavy-duty electric ATVs that can go 50 miles on a charge costing about 90 cents. She’d like to haul her spraying equipment without fogging the vines with exhaust fumes, and the electric ATV motors could get free power from the vineyard’s solar panels. It’s even more cost-efficient for farms producing their own power from solar panels or manure digesters, and as gas prices go up. Barefoot is not the first electric ATV coming to market. Bad Boy Buggies in Natchez, Mississippi, has vehicles intended for hunters. The high price of Barefoot’s model comes from the lithium iron phosphate batteries, the same technology General Motors is putting in the Chevrolet Volt electric car. Some have gone to underground mining operations and electric utilities where the lack of exhaust and short turning radius are a plus.

By Randy Vance Power boating is a fun and relaxing hobby so long as your boat is seaworthy and ready to launch. The following list spells out the checks to make before you buy or sell a power boat: The upholstery is firm, the stitching tight, and the vinyl snug with no wrinkles. The screws are tight, and the heads are snug and level in their holes. In sea trials, the boat feels solid and takes reasonable waves without heavy rattling or flexing.

Shallow-water anglers looking for power options for high-tech skiffs need look no further than Tohatsu/Nissan’s new electronic fuel-injection and horsepower four-stroke outboard engines.

Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Yes Sorry, something has gone wrong. All the answers so far have good nuggets of info. The most important one is: Direct current electrical wiring is not difficult, but you must pay attention; a seemingly small mistake can set your boat on fire, and it will happen when you are out on the water don’t sneer at Murphy’s Law. Fuses are a must. Fuses that blow frequently in a properly designed system do so for one of two reasons:

When you install basic boat wiring, the distance from the power supply to the component and back must be calculated. Once this is done, you can use a formula supplied by organizations such as the American Boat and Yacht Council to determine the thickness gauge of wiring that should be used. Do not solder a connection. Solder connections are susceptible to vibration damage and if heated could fail completely leaving you without power for your electrical component.

Crimp style connections are more appropriate for the marine environment. First crimp the connection and then use adhesive-lined heat-shrink material to seal it from the environment.

Electric Boats – This article explains the basic features and benefits regarding the latest developments in lithium ion battery technology which are now available for use with electric boat motors. Up to the present time the electric boat motor owner has only had available one type of battery chemistry to provide propulsive power for their electric boat motor no matter whether the electric boat is an inboard or outboard motor.

This battery type is of course the lead acid battery. There are two main variations to the lead acid battery depending upon its specific application. Broadly speaking the lead acid engine start or “cranking battery” in its intended application is designed to provide a short, high power burst of electrical current to crank over either a petrol or diesel engine while starting.

This is the type of battery which commonly provides house power on boats as well as presently being the most common type to power electric boat motors. Both types of lead acid batteries however have severe limitations. In addition lead acid batteries contain nasty chemicals such as sulphuric acid and toxic heavy metals like lead which are potentially hazardous to the environment. Lead is a very heavy metal and for many years the search has been on to make a better battery that is also lighter in weight.

Lithium is the logical choice since it is the lightest metal known to man. However in addition to being extremely light in weight, lithium is also extremely reactive and for this reason pure lithium metal is never found in nature.

Although inverters are not capable of running high-demand appliances such as air conditioning or heating like a generator can, they are great for low power uses such as computers, televisions, and small appliances. The ability to chill out in a quiet anchorage and still use your computer and perhaps a blender without the rumbling of a generator is a nice thing indeed.

They do this by converting the straight positive and negative DC power to volt alternating current. Once installed inverters are relatively maintenance-free and can provide years of reliable service. A good installation, however, is important to both good performance and onboard safety. As a marine surveyor I get the opportunity to look over many inverter installations.

I recently purchased a Conquest and would like to install a battery charger for maintaining the batteries while the boat is docked. The marina offers a Ampere shore power outlet on a .

Here are the numbers from our test: My answer to this discrepancy: Power is always lost when using an inverter and there are parasitic draws from our battery we cannot control such as vent fans, LED lights, radio, etc. The temperature was a mild 80 degrees and there was a slight breeze to keep the air moving inside the motorhome. Our TVs were still plugged in but they were off and the only other thing using electricity was the overhead LED lights for the few minutes while filming inside the coach.

If we have one day of bad weather, we know to be more conscious of our power usage and monitor it more closely. More efficient at maintaining temperature and staying cool under any conditions. Better built in ice makers. No propane flame to worry about catching fire. No drip tray to worry about freezing and clogging. No vent cut-out on the RV exterior sidewall. Less humidity inside the fridge.

Most refrigerator manufacturers require a pure sine wave inverter. Takes longer to get cool again once doors have been opened.

Dual Battery Wiring This article describes several techniques for interconnecting outboard motors and dual batteries. There are two distinct applications: The diagram below shows the typical wiring. The battery positive leads are shown in red. The negative leads are shown in green for clarity; code suggests the use of yellow wire. Wiring gauge is determined by current demands and length of the run.

Selecting a Multimeter The Major Players — Volts, Amps, Watts, and Ohms One of the primary players in this game, voltage, or volts, can be thought of as the pressure or force available in an electrical circuit. But another definition of voltage describes it as a difference of potential from one point in the circuit to another. The reason is simple: If there is no potential difference in the circuit, there can be no current flow.

The dogbone-style adapter offers a safe, comfortable grip when connecting to the park power post. It also makes removal easier with less pulling and stress on the cord and plug.

Electrical systems on outboard motors have evolved tremendously over the last few years. Due to the fact that there have been so many additions, we will only be covering the basics in this section. If you need specific information on troubleshooting your make and model of outboard electrical system not mentioned here, please refer to your repair manual. The electrical system of a boat can range from being fairly simple all the way to an electricians nightmare depending on the type of boat.

This can be very discouraging to many people when troubleshooting an electrical system. One thing to remember though, is that most manufacturers pretty much stick to a standard when it comes to electrical system design. If you have purchased a used boat from someone that thought they were an electrical wiz, only to totally cluster any way of tracing a problem due to using whatever color wire they could scrounge up to replace or add an accessory, I really have no way to help you, but definitely feel for you because I have run across that problem so many times I felt like locking the doors and tacking a “for sale” sign on the front door.

In this section we will look at some basic wiring diagrams and list some of the color coded standards that are common on almost every boat made. Motor Components Other than the ignition components which are covered in the ignition components section, there are a few electrical items on an outboard motor that can cause problems. Lets first look at the marine battery.

Technical Details

The current wiring on the boat I am looking at is a bit messy and does not fit our requirements for a family live aboard. If we buy the boat I am definitely going to have to add one and probably two rings to make sure we have a safe and sufficient v supply when we are on shore power. I am planning on running trunking through the boat and then wiring through the trunking, that way I can ensure that there is no way of any gradual damage to the insulation and make sure my work is a lot cleaner.

However, that leads me to a whole mess of questions: Is there really a genuine difference between Marine and Normal cabling when used for internal wiring? Over the next 6 months I will probably have to completely re-wire and add another solar panel, install a new inverter and upgrade the house batteries, Is there a guide for boat electrics that you would recommend?

You may want to choose the back of the boat where the batteries are stored. This worked out perfectly for my boat, as there is plenty of room to install the inverter there. Since I own a pontoon boat, there is no fiberglass to bolt the inverter to. What I decided to do was to use some marine grade plywood wrapped with outdoor carpeting that matched the boat.

Marine grade plywood makes a great foundation to mount electronics to, and the carpeting gives it a finished look. I sandwiched the wood between the metal rails of the battery area giving a flush installation. This was to leave enough room so that the carpet could be wrapped around the wood and still fit between the rails.

Once each of the boards was cut, I cut out a couple of 3 x 16 in strips of carpet. I wrapped the boards with the strips of carpet to test the fit. You want a snug fit, but you don’t want to have to force the board in. You may need to trim the board a little more depending on the thickness of your carpet. Next, I cut the carpet leaving about inches of overhang on all sides.
